Stinking Linking Thinking - A view on SEO Linking Strategies, Link Campaigns and Website Traffic!
Do forget about site relevance for a
moment. Do you really know what is relevant to a site visitor? Do you know
your visitorīs personality? Do you have the slightest idea of all their
interests? Do you have some mind reading script implemented within your
site stats tracker? Just because they are on your palmtree site, that does
not mean your visitor is not a keen mountain biker and interested to go to
a biking or outdoor site.
Link to every honest quality site, that
makes your link visible to people. Give your departing visitors a
selection of sites they can choose from. Your departing visitors are
interested in more than one thing or topic. And you can use this. You can
improve your online-profits even more. It is not generally evil if you place an
affiliate link in between your outbound links every now and then as long
as you do not do too much of it and as long as the link text clearly
indicates, where the visitor will go to when clicking on it. A well
organised link directory with a broad variety of sites included, is a
usefull resource for your visitors as they leave, and they may even
bookmark or remember it for a return visit, which otherwise they may never
do.
At this point the advice from Google to
link to "relevant" pages only has puzzled me. How useful would
Google be themselves, if they would only link to relevant pages, following
their own advice? Search Engines only linking to search engines? What
should this be good for? Widget sites only linking to widget sites? What
would be the benefit for the web user? I like Googleīs approach to
represent relevant results within their SERPs but does this advice really
make sense?
But back to your link building plans. If
you can get just 3 visible links a day pointing to your site from other
sites, this makes up to over ONE THOUSAND real, visible links pointing to
your site until the end of a year. Not dead links, but links that real
people will find, links that will constantly bring real, relevant traffic
to your websites. Do you feel this beeing hard work? 3 new links a day?
No. This takes much less thinking and efforts than a short living
algorithm analysis, page optimisation, keyword density tests, alt and meta
tag optimisation and all this kind of stuff. I do not say you do not have
to pay attention to these factors at all. But do not waste too much time
on it. Do the important SEO basics only, and take the rest of the time for
real natural content and link building, rather than wasting it on running
after each and every short living SEO trend. Do not concentrate so much on
robots. Focus your time on the people who matter: your visitors!
Finally, I have got one last piece of news
for you. If you exchange natural quality links with other sites that
PEOPLE will find, guess what? YES! Google, Yahoo, MSN and all the other
search engine spiders will find these links as well. And they will like
these links even better, because they are all open, honest and natural. No
hiding, no bad tricks, no fooling of the search engine spiders. In the
long or even short run, they will love your site for this. And guess what?
Your ranking will increase and you will receive even more visitors coming
from the search engines in addition to the ones coming through your
natural links. This is, what I call SEO. Period.
Coming to the end, do not understand me
wrong. I have nothing against search engines. They are a wonderful and
useful tool. I use them myself every day. What I am up against is to give
them complete control over my site traffic. I also do not like the dreams
being sold by a vast part of the SEO world because thats what they are -
dreams with big odds of success and very temporary results.
You realy must understand the game! Search
engines do not like this sort of SEO either. They are out there to deliver
accurate and exact results to surfers looking for specific information.
They are interested in the best result, not in the best optimised pages.
If they fail in this point, if they do not deliver the most accurate
results possible, surfers will stop using them and their advertising
profits will drop.
This is the reason why Google, Yahoo and
all the other engines constanly are changing their search algorithm to be
up against dirty SEO tricks. And rightfully they are! SEO today is too
tricky, complicated and short living in itīs results to realy give too
much attention to it.
Start working with other sites instead of
competing with them and start to get visited!
