Stinking Linking Thinking - A view on SEO Linking Strategies, Link Campaigns and Website Traffic!
I suppose, as you are reading this article,
you may not be at the top of the search engines at present. But you are
still hiding your links away and you are still following the advice of too
many people in the SEO world hoping for the glory event of a first page
search engine placement.
Why webmasters are actively hiding away
links from human eyes is totally beyond me. What are they scared of? Are
the afraid somebody may click on a link and may leave their site and go to
another one? I have some news for you: this is exactly what internet users
do. They go from one site to another, surfing through the web and this is
how the web works! Surprise?
And I have got even more news for you: Each
and every page of your website ha a little "X" at the top right
of it. And this WILL take visitors from your site. And more frightful news
to come. Each and every page of your website has a "Home" button
that will take people away from your site.
And those two things you can do absolutely
nothing against, unless you are the programmer of Internet Explorer,
Firefox, Opera or whatever other internet browser. And even if you could
(like some people creating popups with no other choice to close than using
the "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" emergency exit) - be sure - this visitor
WILL feel badly hit in his individual rights on freely surfing through the
internet - or to say it in clear words: he will be pissed!!! - he will be
annoyed and one thing is granted for sure - he will neither bookmark your
page, nor recommend it to his friends, nor will he or she ever come back!
Oh. And one second before YOU leave this
article...! ;-) There is another thing about your website which I can
absolutely GUARANTEE that it will happen! To be honest - it is the ONLY
guarantee I can ever give you about YOUR website. And I do not bother how
HOT or phantastic or unique or splendid your site is. I do not care if you
have the best ever product or service to offer. This guarantee is that
EVERY visitor of your site will leave it again. I will stay on your
website for short or for long. But I will not be staying forever. Nor will
anybody else do. And not even you, the webmaster, yourself!
Thinking about all these facts I have
personally chosen to put my links directory back to where it should be and
where it is placed in a manner how links should be placed. And this is one
of my main pages, maybe even my homepage. This is useful for the visitors
of my page. It is also fair play against the webmasters whose links are
included, often in return to a link to my site. Why should I hide them
away? If I have a useful link directory I will make it available to all of
my visitors, from every page if possible. And if I have a useless link
directory? Well I do not have one, because all the useless links I have
deleted!
You see - people visiting my site will
leave it again anyway. So at least I have the choice where to send them.
By hiding my link section, I would leave them no choice but going back to
Yahoo or Google, or wherever they are used to go. So I chose to send at
least some of them to other websites, websites who like me appreciate free
visitors in return to sending me some of their departing visitors for
free. There is no basic loss for any of us. In contradiction, itīs a
win-win-win situation...
Do not make the widely spread mistake to
hide your links away. The only result is, that you are sending departing
visitors back to the search engines. Search engines, that give you nothing
in return. And guess what? Even search engines do not like hidden links at
all. Because they are unnatural. By hiding your links, you are not only
fooling your visitors. You are also fooling the search engineīs ranking
algorithms! This is clear black hat SEO! One day, it will all hit back. Be
careful, not to get punished or banned!
If you are going to show your link section
honestly and clearly, and provided I have a link on your site to mine,
there is some chance they may come to me instead of going back to any
search engine or bookmarked page. And if YOU are showing your link section
clearly, I will surely do this favour to you in return and send you some
of my departing visitors. In the end it will make all of us more
independent from the search engines and can even bring more traffic to our
websites, than the search engines do. And honestly? Would you prefer
linking to me if I would hide your link away or would you prefer linking
to me, if I clearly show it, sending you a portion of my departing
visitors?
