About Link-Building 

Link Building is essential for a good search engine placement. Many website owners are totally unaware of the importance of link building or do not really understand how link building works.

Besides good keyword research and implementation of correct meta tags, link building is absolutely vital for the success of any website. Linkbuilding is a permanent process and is a little time consuming, so you should reserve some time on a weekly schedule or hire an experienced search engine optimizer (SEO) to do the link building job for you. Without putting some effort into linkbuilding strategies, your website is almost sure to receive no or little traffic.

Linking or link building can be generally divided into 4 different types of linking. It is imperative to notice that each of these linking types is as important as the other. Reciprocal linking is done quite simply. It is a link from your site to another site with the other site placing a link back to your site. As a rule of advice you should preferably exchange links to sites that are relevant to yours. For example, if you have a site about cars, preferably link to sites about cars. In this case, do not exchange links e.g. to health sites for instance, as there is no relevancy to your content and these links may spoil your search engine ranking in the long run. Not the number of links is important at this stage, but the relevancy and ranking of the site linking back to you´re site. Be selective! Also it is a good move to take a look at the sites that are linking to the site you want to exchange the link with. It will be of no help at all if the car site you want to exchange a link with has got 50 reciprocal links from online pharmacies, casino sites or the like.

How to get reciprocal links?

a) Pay a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) company to do it for you. This is dead easy but can be quite expensive.

b) Buy links from sites willing to do so.

c) Exchange links using link exchange sites.

d) Search for sites to exchange links with on your own.

However you do it, be careful not to add too many reciprocal links to quickly. Build your link exchanges up gradually and be selective. If you do it too quickly, it will look unnatural to the search engine robots and they may flag and penalize your site for trying to cheat the search engine rankings. A good figure to start with is not more than 10 to 20 in one month. When your site gets older you can start adding more links by time.

One way links are the links that search engines like most. These links seem most natural to them and they are rated higher than reciprocal links, because the search engines rate them as a clear vote of the other webmaster for your site. One-way links usually receive a far better ranking than reciprocal links. But how to get one way links from other websites? This seems to be more difficult than reciprocal linking at first glance, because you do not have a link back to offer to the other webmaster. The easiest way to spread one-way links to your site onto other websites is article distribution.

Write a good, quality content article about a topic related to your site´s content and distribute it on article directories. Include a link back to your homepage or any other site of your web within this article. Give permission to other webmasters to grab and copy your article into their website. This is done under the condition, that the link to your site remains active. This is the deal. They receive free, quality content that they can immediately use and you receive a link to your website in return. The better quality content your article offers, the more likely and often it will be grabbed by other websites for inclusion. You should also permit for modifications to your article, in order to help avoiding duplicate content filters of search engines.

Article submission can spreac your links very quickly, because there are many webmasters out there, permanently looking for good, free content to publish. This is now getting a little more complicated than the two linking methods mentioned above. However, it is not as tricky if we take a closer look. What is mulitsite linking and how does it work? To get multi-site linking into effect you need to run at least 3 or 4 different websites with different URLs. Or you have to find at least 3 other websites that are interested in creating a multi-site linking network including your site.

Multisite linking works like this: You link to site B. Site B does NOT link back to you, but links to site C. Site C links to site D. And site D links back to you. By this, all of the sites involved get a link to their site, without any of them creating a reciprocal link. It goes without saying, that these multi-site links are rated higher by the search engines, than direct reciprocal link exchanges.

Directory listings are also regarded as good, natural links by the search engine spiders. This is because most directories do not require a link back and are mostly well organised directories or niche directories, sorted by category. It is very simple to submit your website to web-directories. All you need to do is to submit your website to as many web directories as possible. There are thousands of webdirectories out there. So submitting your website to them really is some hard, time consuming work. Some of this work you can do with the help of automated programs. Some you have to submit manualy.

However, it is recommended to always do it manually, as you can then always select the category of each directory that fits best to the topic of your website. This increases not only your chance that the directory will inlcude your site, but also increases your chance to receive real traffic from these directories in addition to the better ranking effect with the search engine spiders. Traffic coming from directories usually is highly relevant traffic by humans looking for the topic or product you offer.

If you make it a goal to submit to one or two directories every day, it will not become too tiresome and the buildup of links will also appear more natural to the search engine spiders. Besides the advantage of increasing your pagerank, always select the category to submit to as well as the title headline, description and selected keywords carefully and in a way being descriptive and attractive to human visitors as well, in order to increase hits and visits from internet surfers using these web directories.
